What's in a name, Egg Harbor History
Historical accounts record that Egg Harbor got its unique name in 1825. Legend has it that a small flotilla of six supply boats owned by French fur trader Commodore Pierce Roulette was headed for Mackinac Island. Among the supplies the boats carried a large store of eggs.
On that fatefull1825 day Roulette ordered his paddlers to put ashore for lunch in a sheltered cove. One of Roulette’s boats quickly took the lead, violating the tradition of the commodore’s boat leading the way. When ordered to stand down and allow the commodore to pass the crew refused.
Slighted, the crew of Roulette’s boat let loose with a barrage of eggs at the offending boat, scoring numerous hits. The boat crew, covered with raw eggs, returned fire with their own eggs. In the resulting hailstorm of eggs the boats, the crews, and later the beach were covered with raw eggs and shells.
This spirit of fun and adventure is still vibrant in Egg Harbor.
