Door County Scuba Diving

Door County Scuba Diving offers sport divers and wreck divers some of the finest fresh water diving in the world. The surrounding waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay are loaded with shipwrecks and underwater sights accessible to both novice and seasoned divers.

The cold, non-salt water of Lake Michigan helps preserve spectacular underwater relics ranging from wooden schooners to steel-hull vessels. No dive trip to the Door Peninsula would be complete without diving the infamous Deaths Door off the north tip of the Peninsula. For nature lovers the area is a natural habitat to a wide variety of aquatic life.

For experienced and beginning divers there are great dive charters, lessons, and tours available. For divers new to the area we recommend contacting a local dive shop or group for the latest dive conditions and safety considerations.

Charter dive trips from the ShoreLine Resort are the best Door County based dive charters. The ShoreLine dives hit some of the most popular Door County shipwrecks including the ever-popular Frank O’ Conner. The charter boat has its own bit of interesting history. It is a converted US Navy Patrol Boat well suited for diving operations. Dinosaur Divers is the on premise dive shop offering gear and other interesting dive paraphernalia.

Where to Door County Scuba Dive


Door County Scuba Diving offers an almost endless number of great shore dives and over a dozen wrecks to dive in the Door Peninsula. While we have not dove all of them but here are several recommendations.


Door County Wreck Diving


The Schooner Carrington

Located on the North side of Hat Island Shoal in Northern Green Bay. The Carrington lies at a depth of 32 to 57 feet and is marked with a mooring buoy. This two-masted wooden schooner was launched in 1853 and wrecked in 1870 while lost in heavy fog.

The schooner Meridian

Located off the Sister Islands in Green Bay. The Meridian lies at a depth of 30 to 40 feet and is marked with a mooring buoy. Vessel launched in 1848 and wrecked in a storm in 1873.

The Schooner Fleetwing

Located about 260 feet northeast of the Garret Bay public boat landingThe Fleetwing lies at a depth of 5 to 25 feet. Depth: 5 to 25 feet. The Fleetwing was Launched in 1867 and Wrecked in 1888 running aground in a gale.

The steamer Louisiana

Located on the southeast side of Washington Harbor and lies at a depth of 10 to 25 feet. The Steamer was launched in 1887 and wrecked in 1913 running aground in a heavy snowstorm, the Louisiana later caught fire resulting in the loss of the ship.

Pilot island wrecks

The Pilot Island wrecks are near the cement dock on Pilot Island and consist of three schooners, the A.P Nicholas, the Forest, and the J.E Gilmore. All the schooners sank in storms in 1891 and 1892. The wrecks lie at a depth of 15 to 40 feet.

The Steamer Frank O’ Conner
Located 2.6 miles north northeast of Cana Island. The O Conner has the distinction of being one of the largest wooden ships ever built. It was launched in 1892 was lost to a fire in 1919. The O’ Conner lies at a depth of 65 feet. The Frank O' Conner is the highlight of many Door County scuba diving trips.

The Schooner Christina Nillson

The Schooner Christina Nillson is located in Baileys Harbor. Launched in 1871 the Nillson ran aground in a blizzard in 1884 and lies at a depth of 20 feet.

 





ShoreLine Dives

Door County scuba diving offers several great shore dives , here are some of the best.

Egg Harbor

The average depth is 20 to 25 feet and expect to find rocks, fish, and dock runes. Located at the south end of Egg Harbor just of f Bayview Road. At Egg Harbors Murphy Park the average depth is 5 to 20 feet.

Fish Creek – Peninsula State Park at Weborg Pier

The average depth is 5 to 20 feet. Expect to find nice rock structure and anchors.

Cave Point

Average Depth is 5 to 15 feet, expect great limestone rock formations and caves.

Jacksonport

Port wreck and warf, average depth 4 to 15 feet, some machinery.

Little Sturgeon Bay

Dive Claffin Rock and Smiths Shoreline off Lime Kiln Road. Average Depth is 5 to 20 feet. Expect to find Wrecks, fish, and structure.

Sturgeon Bay

Bullhead Point – Three wrecks that lie in 3 to 8 feet of water. Take Duluth Ave north to Bullhead point.

Old Quarry County Park

Just north of Sturgeon Bay on Highway “B”. Depths range from 1 to 25 feet. Expect to see wrecks, fish, and structure.
