Portage Park. The Best Secret Door County Park
Our friends are gonna kill us for giving this one out! You will not find this one in any tourist guide. While going north exit Highway 42/57 in Sturgeon Bay on Utah Street, at the north end of the Bay View Bridge. Hang a right and go to Cove Road. Turn right at Cove Rd. and go several blocks to Canal Road. Take a left on Canal and follow it to the US Coast Guard Station. Turn Left at the station and go about ½ a mile. Look for a small stone driveway with a large rock that has a brass plaque on it that’s says “Portage Park.” Go slow it’s easy to miss.
This small park has a great Lake Michigan beach that offers a view that the folks in private homes just to the north pay about a million dollars for! We have been to this beach in the middle of July and saw a grand total of ONE other person there. Great for a beach walk, sunbathing, or a picnic. Just don’t tell anyone we sent you.
Door County Parks System
The Door County parks system is one of the most extensive county parks systems in the entire State of Wisconsin. With seventeen Door County Parks to choose from you can find a county park just right for your event, picnic, or relaxation time.
Parks operated by the Door County Parks Department are open from 6AM to 10 PM. Not all parks are open during the winter. Some other basics include: Keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them. Unfortunately you cannot camp or spend the night in a county park. For county parks with beaches you swim at your own risk if no lifeguard is present or on duty.
Our number one pick for a Door County Park is…
Cave Point County Park This 19-acre park is located within the Whitefish Dunes State Park, so you can visit two of the countys best parks in one stop. Cave Point Park features scenic views of shoreline limestone sea caves. The caves are one of Door Countys most photographed vistas. Stop in and see why. The park also has short hiking trail and picnic area.
