Door County Lighthouses
Door County Lighthouses are an important part of Wisconsin's maritime heritage. Come see and explore living nautical history in beautiful Door County.
Baileys Harbor Range Lights Built in 1869 and automated in 1972. From 1869 to 1969 the lights were used to safely entry into Baileys Harbor. Sailors would line up the upper lights and lower lights, one over the other meant safe water. Open for tours during the Door County Lighthouse Walk in the last weekend in May.
Cana Island Built in 1869 and automated in 1944 the Cana Island Lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation. This is the most popular and easily recoganizable Door County Lighthouse. Cana Island is a small island just off the peninsula's shore. The oil house and keepers' house is open from mid-May through mid-October. The County Maritime Musuem Door County Lighthouse Walk is held the last weekend in May.
Canal Lighthouse Located in Sturgeon Bay the Canal Lighthouse was built in 1899. Automated in 1972 the lighthouse is part of an active Coast Guard Station. The station is located at the mouth of the Sturgeon Bay ship canal, leading into the bay from Lake Michigan. Grounds are usually open to the public during the Door County Maritime Museum Lighthouse Walk.
Chambers Island The island's lighthouse was built in 1858 and automated in 1961. Open for tours on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day when the caretaker is there. You will need to charter a boat, or use our own becuase public boat service is unavailable. Special boat tours are availabel during the Lighthouse Walk..
Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Located in Peninsula State Park. Built in 1868 and automated in 1926. Restored by the Door County Historical Society this lighthouse is a museum. Tours available daily during the summer and on weekends through the third weekend in October. A Wisconsin State Park sticker is required.
Old Baileys Harbor Lighthouse Built in 1852 this light only lasted until 1869. It was closed after the construction of the Baileys Harbor Range Lights.
Pilot Island Lighthouse Built in 1858 and automated in 1962. While not easliy accesible a narrated boat tour passes the lighthouse during the Door County Maritime Museum Lighthouse Walk.
Plum Island Lighthouse Built in 1895 Plum Island was automated in 1969. You can get a good look at the lighthouse while taking the Washington Island Ferry. A narrated boat tour goes past the lighthouse as part of the Door County Lighthouses Walk.
Pottowatomie Lighthouse Located on Rock Island. Built in 1836 and automated in 1956. Rock Island is in a state park and is reachable by ferry from Jackson Harbor on Washington Island.
Sherwood Point Lighthouse Located in Sturgeon Bay. Originally built in 1883 it was automated in 1983. Sherwood Lighthouse has the distinction of being the last manned lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Grounds are usually opened to the public during the Door County Lighthouses Walk.
