Door County Bass Fishing
Serious bass anglers know how good Door County Bass fishing can be. From Mid May to late June even novice anglers can easily land double digit numbers of smallmouth bass. Pros and experienced fishermen can land upwards of 50 nice smallmouth a day.
While nice Triton and Crestliner bassboats can be seen in great numbers all over the Door Peninsual area fancy bass boats are not a must. Plenty of Alumacraft, Smokercraft, and more modest Crestliners will do you proud. Just remember this is big water. We recomend at least about a 17 foot boat.
The great part about the Door County Bass fishing experience is how easy it is to find good fish. Fish relatively shallow, 2 to 12 feet of water. For fishing line to with 8 or 10 pound test. For lures and bait go with the classics, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, flukes, and drop shot rigs will all catch you a mess of smallmouth bass during spring. Once you hit a hotspot fish it hard and don't move on until it dies.
Where to go Door County Bass Fishing Door County bass fishing is pretty hot all along the Peninsula. Smallmouth flock to areas with nice rock structure with sandy or gravel bottom, which is about 75 percent of the shoreline bottom.
Fish the Flats, Saywer Harbor, Little Sturgeon, and Sand Bay and don't let crowds scare you off. On spring weekends expect to see a hundred boats or more out and about. The Door Peninsula is huge and there are plenty of fish to go around.
By the fourth of July the smallies have all moved out the spawning areas to their summer homes. Now the fish can be found in 15 to 60 feet of water. Check local charts for larger underwater rocks structure, humps, sand, and sunken islands. It can be pretty tough finding summer smallies without a fish finder. You also have to be willing to get off shore to find the fish, we are talking up to a mile out in many cases.
Summer Door County Bass fishing is a good time to consider a charter service. If you do not know the area or have an inside track to summer hotspots finding a good spot can be a challenge.
Small Mouth Fishing Gear
Rods and Reels Spinning Rods Your spinning rod should be light and sensitive enough to feel those soft taps of the lure, but is also must be heavy enough to set a hook in the tough mouths of smallmouth. Pick a rod to limber and you will not o properly set hooks. Your best bet is a medium, 61/2 -71/2 foot graphite rod with a fairly stiff butt section and a more sensitive tip.
